100 Car Pile Up Shuts Down I-39

Publish Date: 2022, 02, 18

On Thursday, February 17th, a 100-car pile-up occurred near El Paso, Illinois, a small town near Normal, due to severe weather conditions and mass panic. The winter storm caused a pile-up as drivers traveled southbound to safety. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Car pile-ups can be detrimental to those who are driving cars, especially smaller ones, as many vehicles on the roadways are trucks and semi-trucks. Especially during winter storms, driving on interstate highways requires your full attention. As a driver, many things can go wrong. It is imperative that we proceed with caution when operating our vehicles.

  • First, always be prepared for emergencies. Emergencies such as a crash or running out of fuel can leave you in a dangerous situation. Being prepared with the necessities, such as food, water, a first aid kit, and a blanket might be a way to protect yourself in emergency situations.
  • Second, keep your car free of distractions. Although it may be impossible to eliminate all distractions, moving all things that could viably be considered a distraction to the back seat or the trunk is an easy way to keep distractions out of sight.
  • Third, drive the speed limit. Driving the speed limit is simple, yet effective. Speed limits are set specifically at the safest speed possible while accounting for the terrain we are driving on. Driving well over or well under the speed limit could be dangerous to you or others around you.
  • Fourth, identify any potential threats while driving. In general, people are likely to experience more than 4 car accidents in their life. Some ways to mitigate the risks associated with these experiences can be to watch how other drivers are performing and reacting. For example, paying attention to a driver who is slipping on the roadway may alert you to icy road conditions before you drive over them. Additionally, keeping distance between you and another driver who is driving sporadically is important to the safety of you and your vehicle.
  • Lastly, when weather conditions are unsafe, stay home. In relation to the 100-car pileup, weather conditions can create such an unsafe driving environment for any driver, not just those in smaller vehicles. It is important to identify unsafe driving conditions, such as a snowstorm, rainstorm, or hailstorm, and make the decision to stay home.
