ARCOLA, IL – Two people were injured, one seriously, when a pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer on I-5 near Arcola on Tuesday morning.
According to WCIA, the incident occurred sometime before 10 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate near Exit 203 to Springfield Road.
Troopers say the tractor-trailer was slowing to pull over for unknown reasons when the pickup truck sideswiped the trailer as it was still in the lanes of travel.
The passenger in the pickup was airlifted to a local hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. The driver was also hospitalized via ambulance with less serious injuries. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigation.
It is unclear if the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured. However, they refused medical treatment at the scene.
Southbound traffic on I-57 was delayed for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes reopened by 1 p.m.
