Publish Date: 2023, 04, 13

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL — Three people were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a fiery crash involving two trucks on Interstate 57 near northwest Pesotum, according to Country Herald.

The accident took place at milepost 222, near the Illinois Prairie Rest Stop – Southbound, just before 5:30 p.m.

Illinois State Police said a dump truck, which had been used to work on the median cables, was merging onto the left lane from the interstate’s inner shoulder when it was hit by a semi-truck. The impact of the crash caused the dump truck to catch fire.

The driver of the dump truck, a 29-year-old Waukegan man, and his passenger, a 51-year-old Elgin resident, both suffered undisclosed injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the semi, a 53-year-old Alabama resident, was also transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

All southbound lanes were blocked for about six hours as crews worked to clear the scene. Northbound traffic was also forced to divert at Pesotum for 1.5 hours.

At this time, authorities have not disclosed the cause of the wreck or reported any charges.
