Driver dies after car hits tree, catches fire on I-74 near Mansfield

PIATT COUNTY, IL — One person died Tuesday evening after a fiery single-car accident on Interstate 74 near Mansfield, reports WCIA.

Illinois State Police said the fatal collision took place at milepost 167, about a mile east of North 1300th East Road, just before 6:30 p.m.

Preliminary details indicate a vehicle was heading westbound, when, for reasons still being investigated, it ran off the roadway. After traveling into a ditch, the car collided with a tree and caught fire. First responders arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in flames.

Officials confirmed the driver died from their injuries at the scene.

At this time, no other injuries have been reported, and no other vehicles appear to have been involved.

All identifying information is being withheld as the authorities work to notify the victim’s family.
