Alfalfa Sprouts Recalled after Salmonella Outbreak

Throughout Illinois, an outbreak of salmonella has been linked to a reported 50 cases. The investigation of the cases leads back to Tiny Greens Farm of Urbana through Jimmy John’s restaurants. Kankakee County had three reported cases of salmonella. Jimmy John’s restaurants in Kankakee, Bourbonnais and Manteno voluntarily pulled the alfalfa sprouts from their menus on December 20th.

 On December 30, 2010, the farm issued a recall for alfalfa sprouts with lot numbers 305-348 sold between December 16th and December 29th. A Farm spokesman reported that the products were distributed throughout Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. In total, the outbreak has seen a reported 89 cases in 15 states.

 Salmonella is a common bacteria that affects people in the intestinal tract. Symptoms include bacteria, abdominal cramps and fever that can begin 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of infected foodstuff. According to the Mayo Clinic website, signs and symptoms can last four to seven days.
