American Airlines jet forced to postpone takeoff in Chicago airport due to engine failure

Last Updated: 08 November, 2016

Twenty-one people sustained injuries during the evacuation process when an engine malfunctioned and fell apart on an American Airlines jet and forced it to abort a takeoff from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois for Miami, Florida on Friday, October 28.

Investigators were able to recover around 90% of the disk and there is evidence of an anomaly—which was inside the disk rather than on the surface where it can be clearly seen—where the fatigue cracking starts, a National Transportation Safety Board report showed.

The engine involved in the incident that happened to the Boeing 767 was a General Electric CF6-80. A GE spokesman said he is not privy to which airline had an identical engine disk to the defective one on the American jet.
