Arrest Made in Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident on Damen Avenue

Last Updated: 11 September, 2012

A Chicago man was arrested for a hit-and-run accident at an interstate overpass that killed a newspaper seller on Friday morning.

Anthony Castillo, 23, was heading south on Damen Avenue, nearing the overpass at Interstate 55 also know as the Stevenson Expressway. At approximately 4:30 a.m., Castillo was at the 3100 South block of Damen when he hit Robert Butler, of Bellwood, who was at the intersection selling newspapers.

Butler screamed as he was hit by Castillo’s white Jeep Laredo and flew onto the hood of an oncoming car. Butler’s body was then run over by Castillo’s vehicle as he left the scene of the accident. Witnesses stated Castillo appeared to be going over 80 mph. Butler, 51, died at the scene from his injuries.

Police officers who were at the scene followed the Jeep and pulled over Castillo at the 1800 west block of 36th Street. He was found to be in possession of cocaine while his passenger, Isaiah Caneles, was found to have marijuana on his person.

On Sunday, September 9th, Castillo was charged with reckless homicide with a vehicle, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and failing to reduce speed. The judge set his bond for $500,000. Investigators are awaiting toxicology test results on Castillo to see if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
