Bicycle Crash Sends 13-year-old to Hospital

Last Updated: 10 June, 2011

A 13-year-old boy received injuries when he was hit by a pick-up truck on June 2, 2011. The accident occurred on Kennedy Avenue at Broadway Street in Bradley at 9:45 in the morning.

The teenager was on his bike while going to a baseball card shop when he was hit by the vehicle. He was taken to Riverside Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The unnamed minor received a written warning from police for crossing against the stoplight.  The driver was not ticketed as the  driver was not deemed at fault by the police.

However the boy’s mother, Tina Helsel, states that her son pushed the crosswalk button at the stoplight and made it halfway across the street when he was hit by the pick-up truck.  She states that her son’s version of the story differs from the police’s version and that she faces the possibility of being sued by the driver of the vehicle.
