Chicago Westside House Fire kills one, leaves family homeless

Last Updated: 27 June, 2011

In the early hours of June 20, 2011, a house caught fire in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The fire left the family homeless and killed a two-month-old baby girl.

The fire started on a mattress and became so hot that family members could not get Tiniya Coleman who was in a first floor bedroom of the house on the 800 block of North Laramie. A firefighter grabbed the girl and she was transported to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

The house had a fire detector but the battery in the device was dead. The fire remains under investigation by the Chicago Fire Department. The residents of the home, nine adults and four children, are left without a home. The girl’s family are being put up temporarily by the American Red Cross.

Fires can become very hot, very fast and lead to loss of life. If you or a loved one has lost someone to a house fire, call Spiros Law, P.C. at (815) 929-9292 to find out your legal options.
