Crash involving Greyhound bus in Highland kills 3, injures 14

Publish Date: 2023, 07, 12

HIGHLAND, IL – Three people were killed and 14 others were injured, some seriously, after a Greyhound bus slammed into several semi-trucks near Highland Silver Lake early Wednesday.

According to KMOV, the bus was traveling on I-70 westbound from Indianapolis to St. Louis when it collided with three semi-trucks that were parked along the exit ramp to the Silver Lake rest stop shortly before 2 a.m.

Several bystanders, including at least one of the truck drivers, helped evacuate the bus.

Three people on the bus sustained fatal injuries. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigation.

Four other passengers were airlifted and another ten were transported via ambulance to local hospitals. The severity of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.

Parking on the side of exit ramps is prohibited by Illinois state law, according to the Associated Press. However, trucking industry experts say drivers frequently pull off at these locations for overnight stays due to limited parking at rest stops.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending a team to investigate the deadly collision. Our news team will continue to monitor this developing story and provide any updates as they are made available to the public.
