Crashed train carrying oil still burning in Illinois

Last Updated: 18 March, 2015

A BNSF Railway freight train was carrying oil when it derailed in northwestern Illinois, and 24 hours later, it was still burning at the crash site near where a tributary meets the Mississippi River, NPR reported on March 7.

This is the third fiery crash in three weeks of oil trains carrying crude oil from the Bakken area of North Dakota, bringing up concerns about the oil’s volatility and the safety standards used to assess the trains that will be carrying this kind of shipment.

Fort Worth, Texas-based BNSF Railway is the second-largest freight railroad network in the United States, second to Omaha, Nebraska-based Union Pacific Railroad.

Fortunately, no one in this train accident was injured. However, this is not always the case, and both serious injuries and financial losses can be incurred in the event of an accident. The attorneys of Spiros Law, P.C., serve personal injury victims or injured workers in the central Illinois area by helping them pursue the funds they need to recover.
