Defective Airbag Deployments Leads to Recall for Jeep SUVs

Last Updated: 12 November, 2012

Chrysler announced that they are recalling Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty vehicles dues to problems with the air bag release.

Over 900,000 vehicles produced between 2002 and 2004 are being recalled because of airbags that are deploying without cause. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began a preliminary investigation due to complaints of inadvertent deployments.

The study found that there were 215 cases of unintentional airbag deployment that resulted in 81 minor injuries involving both Jeep SUV models. The cause comes from a module that fails to keep the front and/or side airbag  from deploying when the vehicle is not in the middle of an impact action.

Of the recalled vehicle, over 740,000 come from the United States and over 49,000 come from Canada. The remaining recalled vehicles come from outside those two countries.
