Erratic vehicle claimed life of 82-year-old in Polk

Last Updated: 07 October, 2014

Washington County officials reported that a two-vehicle accident that occurred on U.S. Route 41 just north of Western Avenue in the town of Polk in Illinois resulted in the death of one individual, FOX 6 reported on September 19.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that a sport utility vehicle driven by a 63-year-old Ellsworth local was swerving erratically along the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 at around 1:30 p.m. The vehicle then entered the median, made a sharp left turn, and then traversed the wrong way into northbound lanes, striking a car as it did so.

An 82-year-old Barrington local was in the vehicle with his wife when the Ellsworth local hit them. He died at the scene of the accident, and his wife was treated on site for minor injuries.

Authorities are investigating possible causes of the incident, and they suspect a medical condition may have been what prompted the manic driving behavior.
