Food Bowls at Petco Found to Have Low Levels of Radioactive Material

Last Updated: 09 July, 2012

Contaminated stainless steel pet bowls from the Petco pet supply store chain were found to have low levels of a radioactive material. The Bourbonnais location is one of 11 stores that may have received these pet bowls.

A shipment of pet food bowls arrived at the Joliet warehouse in the middle of June and Illinois Emergency Management Agency inspectors found that some items gave off radiation. Two of the eleven stores received a visit from IEMA personnel who found items that contained the colbalt-60 material present in these items.

The bowls were manufactured outside of the United States. While the amount of radioactive material is low, it is the goal of the IEMA to prevent unnecessary exposure. According to the IEMA, any potentially contaminated bowls would have been purchased in the last few weeks.

A defective pet bowl can be a problem not only for the pet but for those family members who live in the home with the pet. If you or a loved one knows someone who has suffered injuries from a defective product, call Spiros Law, P.C. at (815) 929-9292 to explore your legal rights.
