Generic Version of Cholesterol Medication Recalled by Manufacturer

Last Updated: 26 November, 2012

The maker of a generic brand of Lipitor has recalled the drug after some batches were found to contain glass particles.

Indian drugmaker Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., discovered the problem with certain lots of 10-, 20- and 40-milligram doses of the drug, known generically as atorvastatin calcium. The 80-milligram dosage does not appear to be affected. The drug is a generic version of Lipitor which is used to control cholesterol.

Ranbaxy did not state how the problem was discovered nor did it report any injuries connected to the tainted medication. The company is currently conducting an investigation which it expects to take two weeks to complete.

Ranbaxy already is under tighter scrutiny because of problems with deficiencies in manufacturing that were discovered in a 2008 investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Medication to treat health issues should not make people sick. If you or a loved one knows someone who has taken medication that was recalled, call Spiros Law, P.C. at (815) 929-9292 for a legal consultation.
