Iginition and Roll-away Problems Leads to Honda Recall

Last Updated: 13 December, 2012

Honda announced plans to recall over 800,000 vehicles because of problems with the ignition system that can allow the vehicles to keep rolling when turned off.

U. S. safety inspectors opened a probe in October 2012 after receiving 43 consumer complaints regarding the 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey and Pilot models in relations to the ignition switch. The Japanese auto company reports that a part in the ignition system could become worn or damaged and allows a key to be removed from the ignition without the vehicle transmission lever being in park. In doing so, this can allow the vehicle to roll away and perhaps cause a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that it received complaints purporting that some Honda vehicles had rolled after ignition failure. These vehicles stopped only after hitting objects including but not limited to parked cars, fences, and a tree. One consumer stated they had been knocked down and run over by a 2003 Odyssey while attempting to stop it from rolling away, fracturing a fibula (calf bone) in the process.

Honda stated that the recall will affect the Odyssey minivans and Pilot crossovers from model years 2003 to 2004, and the Acura MDX crossover from model years 2003 to 2006. Recall notices will be sent out to owners, according to American Honda, starting in February 2013.

Vehicles with faulty parts can lead to accidents with varying levels of injury. If you or a loved one knows someone who has been injured because of a recalled product, call Spiros Law, P.C. at (815) 929-9292 to explore their legal options.
