Publish Date: 2023, 02, 21

MACON COUNTY, IL — A 40-year-old Springfield man died early Tuesday after a collision off Interstate 72 in Harristown, according to WCIA.

The accident happened at the interchange with U.S. Routes 36 and 51, west of Decatur.

Illinois State Police said the man was driving an SUV westbound when, for reasons still being investigated, he veered off the right side of the roadway. The SUV collided with an embankment before becoming airborne and then striking part of a nearby overpass.

The male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials. The Macon County Coroner listed the victim’s cause of death as “massive head, neck and torso trauma.”

No other vehicles appear to have been involved, and no other injuries were reported.

A section of the westbound interstate was closed for more than two hours. All lanes were later reopened at 5:11 a.m.

An investigation by the ISP and the Macon County Coroner’s office remains ongoing, with routine toxicology screens underway and an inquest pending.
