Last Updated: 01 November, 2013

A violent crash along Interstate 55 near Litchfield, Illinois on the morning of Friday, October 25 led to the death of a mother and her two young children.

According to the Illinois State Police, a Chevrolet Impala in which six people were riding was driving very slowly along the highway at around 5:20 a.m. when a white cargo van slammed into it from behind.

Police say that the woman, identified as 27-year-old Alea Shannon and two of the children, 8-year-old Alfredo McGee, Jr. and 2-year-old Armondo McGee, died at the scene of the accident. The driver and father of the children, identified as 31-year-old Alfredo McGee, was brought to a Litchfield hospital and afterwards taken to a Springfield hospital where he was listed as being in stable condition.

Police investigators have yet to ascertain why the Impala was going very slowly on a national highway or had been stopped.
