Red Onions Linked to Salmonella

Last Updated: 04 August, 2020

Following a salmonella outbreak linked to red onions that sickened people across many states, the Food and Drug Administration has announced that a company based in Bakersfield, California is likely the source of the potentially contaminated onions. Throughout the investigation, it was determined that red onions are likely the source of this outbreak, and the company, Thomson International, Inc., notified the FDA.

In light of this outbreak, Thomson International Inc. will be recalling varieties of onions that could have come in contact with potentially contaminated red onions, likely due to cross-contamination. Onions being recalled include red, white, yellow, and sweet onions from Thomson International.

Thus far, the salmonella outbreak has sickened 396 people and put almost 60 in the hospital for treatment. Cases first started being reported in early June. The FDA’s investigation now involves determining whether any other products are linked to the illness that may still be unknown.

Salmonella is an infection from bacteria, commonly caused by contaminated food or water. Signs of salmonella poisoning may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps between a few hours and days after exposure to the bacteria. Children under the age of 5, people over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience a severe illness from salmonella poisoning.

The CDC is now urging everyone with any symptoms of salmonella poisoning to contact a physician, write down what they ate a week prior to becoming sick, and report the illness to the health department. After receiving medical treatment, if needed, your next option is to call the attorneys at Spiros Law. P.C. By working with our firm, we may be able to help you recover financial compensation by holding the company liable for the salmonella contamination liable.
