Students in Urbana receive citations for bicycle law violations

Last Updated: 14 April, 2014

The Urbana Police Department has begun implementing bicycle safety rules and regulations on the road again recently in an effort to increase safety and awareness, and has already cited 22 people for bicycle-related violations since Tuesday, April 1.

Urbana Police Officer Sergeant Andy Charles said they enforce these regulations for bicycles to instill in the minds of every bicyclist the importance of following road rules and how this can help prevent the occurrence of accidents. Charles added that the enforcement of the stringent regulations can also result in a smoother flow of traffic.

Under the Illinois vehicle code, bicycle riders are supposed to follow the same rules as drivers of other vehicles.
