Toddler Dies After Flat Screen TV Falls on Him

Last Updated: 07 March, 2012

In the past four months, four children under the age of five have died as a result of being hit by a falling television. The latest victim was 13-month-old Shaun Brown of the Roseland neighborhood in Chicago.

Monday afternoon, the toddler was playing upstairs when he ‘tagged’ the flat screen TV which rested atop of a stand meant to hold a fish tank. Family members downstairs heard a thud and screams. Brown was rushed to Roseland Community Hospital by his father, also Shaun Brown. The child was later transferred to Comers Children’s Hospital where he died on Tuesday afternoon.

Between 1990 and 2007 there has been a 40% increase in the number of children seen in emergency rooms for furniture tip-over accidents, according to Dr. Gary Smith, president of the Child Injury Prevention Alliance and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Smith also states that televisions account for nearly half of these tip-over accidents and young children are the most common victims.
