University of Illinois student killed in two-vehicle accident

Last Updated: 05 November, 2015

Twenty-year-old journalism student at the University of Illinois and Buffalo Grove resident Brett Lerner, who was killed in a car accident on Friday, October 23, was described by family and friends as outgoing and funny.

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois’ campus newspaper, reported that Lerner, who worked for the newspaper, was out on assignment for local television station WCIA when the crash happened.

According to preliminary investigations made by the Illinois State Police, Lerner was on his way to cover a football game for a Champaign TV station when his vehicle, which was headed north on Illinois Route 47 in Champaign County, collided with a southbound vehicle.

Pomerantz said his family had original plans to hold a memorial service at the Shalom Memorial Park chapel in Arlington Heights, which has a capacity of about 350 people, but instead held the ceremony before the football game between the Fighting Illini and the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday, October 24, an event which was attended by around 700 people.
