According to Illinois State Police, the fatal accident happened in the area of Wilmington Road and U.S. Route 45/52, at around 8:18 a.m.
Investigators say a Kia was northbound on US-45/52 at the same time a Ford Fusion was heading westbound on Wilmington Road. A driver in a Chevrolet Impala going eastbound on Wilmington Road ran a stop sign at the intersection, causing the Impala to hit the Kia. The impact sent the Kia into the right ditch on the intersection’s north side, where it caught fire. Meanwhile, the Impala proceeded eastbound on Wilmington Road and collided with the Ford Fusion in the westbound lane.
Officials said both occupants of the Kia were pronounced deceased on the scene.
The drivers of the Impala and the Fusion suffered undisclosed injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
