PIATT COUNTY, IL — A 20-year-old Champaign man has been identified as the driver who died Tuesday evening after a fiery crash on Interstate 74 near Mansfield, according to WCIA.

The crash happened on the westbound side of the interstate at milepost 167, about a mile before North 1300th East Road. It was first reported shortly before 6:30 p.m.

An early investigation by Illinois State Police shows the young man was driving westbound, when, for reasons still unknown, his vehicle veered off the roadway and entered a ditch. It then collided with a tree and caught fire. First responders arrived to find the vehicle engulfed by flames.

The driver was pronounced deceased on the scene, confirmed ISP. The Piatt County Coroner has since identified the victim as Brendan Hughes.
