Upstate New York State Company Recalls Chives Due to Possible Listeria Contamination.

Last Updated: 20 May, 2011

According to federal food authorities, chives from Goodness Garden of New Hampton in New York State are being recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

Listeria is a bacterium that can cause health issues for young children, frail adults and those with weakened immune systems.  Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and muscle aches according to the Mayo Clinic. Should the listeria infection spread to your nervous system, symptoms include headache, stiff neck, loss of balance and possible convulsions. For pregnant women there is the risk of miscarriages and stillbirths.

The chives were packaged in plastic clamshells containers, 1-pound bags and bunches held together by twist ties. The oniony-flavored herb that looks like grass leaves was sold through retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alabama, Virginia and Illinois.

At this time the FDA has not had a report of illness associated with the recalled chives. The recalled lot is number 0201111 and is dated May 6. Consumers may return their chives to retailers for a refund.
