Video Baby Monitor Recalled after Investigation into Strangulation Deaths

Last Updated: 16 July, 2012

An infant video monitoring system has been recalled after investigations into the deaths of two infants.

The Summer Infant video baby monitor was found to be responsible for the deaths of two infants in Washington D.C. and south Carolina when the cord wrapped around the neck of two babies in separate incidents in 2010. Another incident involved a near strangulation of a six-month old from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the same year.

Safety instructions on the product have been changed to read that the video equipment and related cords should be placed so that they are not within arm’s reach of the child. The Consumer Product Safety Comission received reports of seven strangulation deaths in regard to the product since 2004 and are working with Summer Infant on a voluntary recall of the product.
