Woman, child killed in single-vehicle crash on Mill Rd. in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, IL – An elderly driver and her three-year-old passenger were killed when her car slammed into a natural gas substation near the Georgetown Fairgrounds on Saturday.

According to a report by Vermillion County First, the 77-year-old woman’s car careened into the Ameren natural gas substation at the intersection of Mill Street and North Seminars Street at about 8 a.m. The collision caused a fiery explosion, a witness told WCIA.

The area of Mills Street was closed for several hours as a result of the accident and subsequent fire at the substation, and the supply of natural gas to the city of Georgetown had to be shut down.
