UPDATE: Mattoon man, 1 other dead after crash on IL-130 in Charleston

Publish Date: 2023, 02, 22

COLES COUNTY, IL — A 47-year-old Mattoon man has been identified as one of the two drivers killed early Monday due to a head-on crash in Charleston, reports Journal Gazette & Times-Courier.

The fatal accident occurred on Illinois Route 130, about 1/4 of a mile south of Coles County Road 300 North (300N), on February 13, at about 5:30 a.m.

A preliminary investigation by the Illinois State Police found that a 50-year-old Fairfield man was driving an SUV northbound. At one point, for reasons still unknown, his vehicle veered past the center line and collided with the front-end of the Mattoon man’s southbound car.

The driver of the southbound car, Micah J. Morrison, and the driver of the striking SUV both died from injuries at the scene.

Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers noted that at this time, the identity of the other driver is being withheld until his family is notified.

No passengers were involved and no other injuries were reported.

A section of Route 130 was closed in both directions for nearly four hours as Illinois State Police investigated.
